How to get your medical Cannabis card in...

Online Providers

You can search for a qualified medical provider on the Maine Medical Use of Cannabis Program (MMCP) website. Here are a few recommendations for where you can go to get your certification online.  Most have same day appointments.

 

 See your Primary Care Doctor. 

Your primary care doctor can issue a certification.  Some are more cannabis friendly than others.

 

 

 Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • You must be at least 18 years old to qualify for a medical cannabis card in Maine. Pediatric Certifications are possible but must be made with a Doctor and have parental consent.
  • You must be a resident of Maine with valid state-issued identification.
  • Maine is among the least restrictive states.  There are no specific qualifying conditions, your provider can decide if Medical Cannabis will help you.  Many people use cannabis to help with Pain, Nausea, Difficulty Sleeping, Inflammation Disorders among many others. 
  • The cost of a medical cannabis card varies depending on the medical provider and is usually $30-$50.

1. Find a certified medical provider.

You can search for providers on the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services website. Here are a few recommendations for where you can go to get your certification:

 

2. Schedule an appointment with the provider.

The provider will need to assess your medical condition and determine if you qualify for a medical card. Here are the qualifying stand-alone medical conditions for medical cannabis in New Hampshire:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)(age 21 and older)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)(under age 21) (requires a consultation with a certified provider of child and/or adolescent psychiatry, developmental pediatrics, or pediatric neurology, who (1) confirms that the autism spectrum disorder has not responded to previously prescribed medication or that other treatment options produced serious side effects and (2) supports certification for the use of therapeutic cannabis)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Chronic Pain (moderate to severe)
  • Severe Pain that has not responded to previously prescribed medication or surgical measures or for which other treatment options produced serious side effects
  • Opioid Use Disorder, with associated symptoms of cravings or withdrawal (requires a provider who is actively treating the patient for opioid use disorder and who is board-certified in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry)
  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Glaucoma
  • Intractable Seizures

3. Receive a written certification from the provider.

The certification must state that you have a qualifying medical condition and that you would benefit from the use of medical cannabis.

4. Complete the patient application form.

The application form can be found on the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services website.

  1. Pay the $50 Application Fee: A check or money order, payable to “Treasurer-State of NH”
  2. Submit the application and supporting documents. The application and supporting documents can be mailed or submitted online.
  3. Wait for approval. The approval process typically takes 2-4 weeks.
  4. Receive your medical card. Once you are approved, you will receive your medical card in the mail.
 

Here are the supporting documents that you will need to submit with your application:

  • Proof of New Hampshire residency
  • Written Certification from your provider
  • Copy of your driver’s license or state ID
  • Copy of a recent utility bill or other document that shows your New Hampshire address

1. Find a certifying healthcare provider.

2. Schedule an appointment with the provider.

During the appointment, the provider will assess your medical condition and determine if you qualify for medical cannabis. If you do qualify, the provider will issue you a certification.

3. Register with the Medical Use of Marijuana Program.

Once you’ve been certified by your healthcare provider, you will receive an email with your unique four-digit personal identification number (PIN), along with instructions on how to register. You can register for a medical cannabis card online at the Medical Use of Marijuana Program Online System or by mail using the downloadable registration form. (Please note that processing times for mail applications will be longer.)

Make sure to have the following items available:

  • Your four-digit PIN
  • A valid proof of Massachusetts residency, such as a current driver’s license or state ID card*
  • A passport-style, color photo taken within the last six months days by a smartphone or a professional photographer
  • $50 registration fee for the first year and $25 for each renewal.

 

4. Receive your medical cannabis card.

Your card will be mailed to you within 7-14 business days. Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older to qualify for a medical cannabis card.
  • There are a number of qualifying medical conditions for medical cannabis in Massachusetts. You can find a list of qualifying conditions on the Medical Use of Marijuana Program website.
  • You can only purchase medical cannabis from a licensed medical marijuana treatment center (MMC).
  • The maximum amount of medical cannabis you can possess at one time is a 60-day supply, or up to 10 ounces.
